Holiday Closures 2026

In BC, licensed daycares closures generally fall into three categories: Statutory Holidays, Scheduled Breaks, and Professional Development (Pro-D) Days.

No Nuts Policy

All daycare centres in B.C. enforce a strict no-peanut (and often no-nut) policy to protect children with severe, life-threatening allergies.

Parents are generally asked to ensure all packed lunches and snacks are 100% nut-free. Daycares, along with schools, are required to have allergy-safe policies in place.

Daycare Fever Policies

In British Columbia, daycare fever policies generally require children to stay home if they have a temperature of 38.5C or higher. Children must be fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication (such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen) before returning to the centre.

Key details regarding BC daycare fever policies include:

  • Definition of Fever: Generally considered 38.5C or higher.

  • Return Policy: Children must be fever-free for 24 hours without medication.

  • When to Stay Home: Children should not attend if they are too sick to participate in normal activities, including outdoor play.

  • Other Symptoms: Along with fever, children should be kept home if they exhibit symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, rashes, or severe cough.

  • Notification: Parents are expected to notify the center if their child is ill and will not be attending.

Under BC law, licensed childcare operators must maintain the following standards:

Daily Health Checks: Parents are expected to assess their child before drop-off. If a child arrives with symptoms, the provider has the right (and often the legal obligation) to refuse entry.

Mandatory Pick-up: If a child becomes ill during the day, the daycare must separate them from the group (in a supervised "quiet area") and the parent must pick them up immediately (usually within 1–2 hours).

Medication Policy: Most daycares will only administer prescription medication if it is in the original container with a clear pharmacist label and a signed consent form from the parent.

Note: Giving a child "fever-masking" medication (like Advil) just to get them through the daycare day is strictly prohibited.

Supporting Your Childcare Provider

Building a strong bridge between home and child care doesn't just make life easier for the adults—it creates a world of stability for your child. When we’re on the same page, your child gets the best version of us both.

Here are a few ways we can stay in sync:

  • Share the Love: A little appreciation goes a long way. Positive feedback helps your provider feel valued and motivated.

  • Mind the Clock: Respecting drop-off/pick-up times and center policies keeps the day running smoothly for everyone.

  • Health First: Following wellness protocols (like keeping a feverish kiddo home) keeps the whole "village" healthy.

  • The "Heads Up": Life happens! If you’re running behind, a quick text or call helps your provider adjust.

  • Open the Floor: If something is on your mind, let’s schedule a dedicated time to chat rather than rushing a conversation at the door.

The Bottom Line: When we approach care as a partnership, we ensure your child receives the consistent, high-quality environment they deserve.

Tips for preparing Daycare meals

Preparing daycare meals involves packing a well-balanced selection of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and protein. Choose foods that are age-appropriate, easy to handle, and simple for children to eat independently. Prioritize food safety by keeping perishable items cold with ice packs and using containers that children can open with minimal assistance. Include familiar favorites to encourage healthy eating habits, and carefully avoid choking hazards for children under four years old.

Key Components of a Balanced Daycare Meal

Protein:
Include options such as lean meats, baked chicken pieces, hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, cheese, beans, lentils, or hummus.

Vegetables & Fruits:
Offer a colorful variety like berries, banana slices, or lightly steamed vegetables. Choose items with little to no added salt or sugar.

Whole Grains:
Pack whole-grain bread, crackers, pasta, rice, or tortillas to provide lasting energy.

Dairy or Alternatives:
Provide milk, yogurt, or fortified soy beverages. For toddlers under two years old, serve whole milk unless otherwise advised.

Helpful Tips for Success

Safety First:
Avoid small, hard, round, or sticky foods that may pose choking risks for children under four.

Keep Food Safe:
Use an insulated lunch bag with ice packs to maintain safe temperatures for perishable items.

Easy to Eat:
Select finger foods that small hands can manage easily, such as cut fruit, cheese cubes, or small sandwiches.

Include Familiar Foods:
Pack one or two well-liked items to help children feel comfortable and confident during mealtime.

Prepare in Advance:
Cook and portion items like pasta, chicken, or muffins ahead of time to simplify busy mornings.

Be Allergy-Aware:
Follow your daycare’s guidelines regarding nut-free policies and other allergy restrictions to ensure a safe environment for all children.
